About: The solo exhibition of Annabelle Schatteman, titled ‘The Third Passage’, encompasses a personal journey through the subsequent stage of female existence – a chapter that is connected to menopause. The exhibition is an ode to the blood that is no longer present and a farewell that clears the way for the next phase of life.

Annabelle Schatteman intuitively explores the transformation of femininity and allows it to take form in an extensive landscape of sculpted flowers, shells, and mythological figures. These embody the beauty and stillness of life and motherhood, but also the fear of change and transience. With an energy that is both explosive and focused, Schatteman expresses the emotion and complexity of ageing, as well as its strength and depth. Flowers like lilies, poppies, and amaryllis bleed and wilt within her work, symbolising the wounds and pain that grow alongside saying goodbye. The sculptural still lifes paradoxically embrace the inevitable change that life brings. Schatteman makes the transition from heaviness to lightness palpable through the movement she captures in her powerful and fleeting sculptural handwriting. In her work, she seeks a new harmony with life within her restlessness, which only becomes tangible after experiencing the pain of farewell.

“The woman who is willing to make that change must become pregnant with herself, at last. She must bear herself, her third self, her old age.” – Ursula K. Le Guin

"Artist Bio: Annabelle Schatteman is a sculptor and image-maker whose artistic practice revolves around cycles, processes, and the exploration of temporality. Describing herself as an "image-making writer," she approaches each project like writing a book—an intuitive, evolving process that allows her to uncover new narratives and create multiple works, often incorporating various materials like clay, PUR foam, plaster, and bronze. Inspired by the representation of women throughout history and fascinated by the fragility of life, Schatteman’s art grapples with the frustration of impermanence. Her figurative sculptures, often feminine in form, merge storytelling with research drawn from anthropology, psychology, and mythology, crafting works that reflect on human existence and its cyclical nature. Schatteman integrates imperfections, such as cracks in the material, as part of the narrative, embracing the inevitable passage of time while striving to create lasting expressions of life’s fleeting moments.

About: Machine Echoes’ is the first of three group exhibitions in the ESC 2034 series curated by 0-1 Gallery. By exploring the futures of nature and technology, the exhibition covers themes such as artificial intelligence, the transformation of communication, and the future of ecological awareness. From digital phenomena to ecological sculptures, each work invites us to reflect on these evolving relationships. Additionally, each piece challenges us to rethink how we interact with our environment, offering a glimpse into the decade ahead — a conversation between nature and technology.

Established in 2020 as a digital initiative, the ESC platform has consistently pushed the boundaries of contemporary art. Each year’s theme, ‘A decade into the future,’ invites artists to imagine what the world might look like ten years from now.

Now, this exhibition marks a significant milestone for 0-1 Gallery as ESC transitions from an online format to its first physical event. After receiving over 600 submissions, 26 artists were selected to participate in the ESC 2034 series. ‘Machine Echoes’ will feature the first group, setting the stage for an exploration of our shared future.

Finally, ‘Machine Echoes’ will take place at See Lab (→) in The Hague, Netherlands, from October 19-26, providing a more immersive and impactful experience.

‘Netting and Waiting’

Group exhibition: ESC 2034 series
Curated by: Elina Alekseeva & Catelijne Boele

Participating artists: Josephine Rooney, Min Gweon, Travis Geertruida and Jiajia Qi
Duration: 04.10.2024 to 13.10.2024
Opening hours: 12:00 - 17:00 PM (and by appointment on weekdays)
Opening: 04.10.2024 18:00 – 21:00h

About: The exhibition ‘Netting and Waiting’ unfolds around the stories of the ‘nettenboetsters’ (‘net makers’) - women of Scheveningen who gathered in the fields of the dunes to create large fishing nets. By the act of constructing these nets communally, they created a space of solidarity and creation, which soothed the uncertainty of waiting for sons and husbands to return home from long fishing trips. These trips at sea were dangerous and many fishermen did not return. It was a latent fear that spread throughout the village; to receive the news that a son or husband did not make it back to shore alive. The exhibition is inspired by this process of craft-based labour and its ability to alleviate anxiety in an uncertain world, which as a sentiment transcends different time periods. We see waiting as a liminal space where nothing seems to happen, but with a transformed perception of time it is an active period, where slow processes and connections grow to emerge later. By retelling the stories of the net makers and connecting these to different artistic practices, we attempt to explore a connection between different timelines of sensitive labour. Alongside historical elements of Scheveningen, four contemporary artists will share their work, which each in its own way, conceptually touches upon the liminal space between waiting and creating.

Nederlandse versie:

Exhibition:
Opening: July 12th | 18:00 H
Open: July 12th - July 14th | 13:00 - 17:00 H
Vernissage: 12 th of July | 18:00 - 21:00 H

Short description:
‘Trial and Errrorrr’ is an exhibition of ‘works in progress’, inviting 7 artists based in The Hague to present their ongoing projects. ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ aims to create a playground for new ideas, using the exhibition format as a testing ground for previously unseen performances, workshop trials, readings, technical experiments, or physically unfinished works. The exhibition brings together works by artists Beatrice Cera, Eilit Marom, Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh, Mar Fu Qi, Nienke Roth, Rosa van Walbeek and Valerio Conti. In the month preceding the exhibition, feedback gatherings and conversations were held; sharing insights, ideas and try-outs of works in process. These feedback sessions have been central to the curation of the exhibition. In this way, ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ is one outcome of these feedback moments. The exhibition aims to contribute support that is often missing for emerging artists and to fill a gap that is left after leaving the art academy, particularly that of artistic discussion, theoretical insight and critical reflection. With this in mind, ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ attempts to create a safe and collaborative space; a place for project development and experimentation whilst escaping preconceptions of what an exhibition should be. ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ is curated by ‘WaitingSnake Studios’, a curator duo based in The Hague run by Clara Sharell and Emily Stevenhagen. Their central goal is to build a supportive network of emerging artists, for and with each other, and create a new community in an art world that can be difficult to enter alone.
