Short description:
‘Trial and Errrorrr’ is an exhibition of ‘works in progress’, inviting 7 artists based in The Hague to present their ongoing projects. ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ aims to create a playground for new ideas, using the exhibition format as a testing ground for previously unseen performances, workshop trials, readings, technical experiments, or physically unfinished works. The exhibition brings together works by artists Beatrice Cera, Eilit Marom, Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh, Mar Fu Qi, Nienke Roth, Rosa van Walbeek and Valerio Conti. In the month preceding the exhibition, feedback gatherings and conversations were held; sharing insights, ideas and try-outs of works in process. These feedback sessions have been central to the curation of the exhibition. In this way, ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ is one outcome of these feedback moments. The exhibition aims to contribute support that is often missing for emerging artists and to fill a gap that is left after leaving the art academy, particularly that of artistic discussion, theoretical insight and critical reflection. With this in mind, ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ attempts to create a safe and collaborative space; a place for project development and experimentation whilst escaping preconceptions of what an exhibition should be. ‘Trial and Errrorrr’ is curated by ‘WaitingSnake Studios’, a curator duo based in The Hague run by Clara Sharell and Emily Stevenhagen. Their central goal is to build a supportive network of emerging artists, for and with each other, and create a new community in an art world that can be difficult to enter alone. Short description:
As an artist, Iris van der Zee is concerned with the role of cultural objects in the human experience of the past, present and future - and how these change over time. In her series Vessels of Histories, Iris plays with the discrepancy between the original meaning attributed to an image and the interpretation that readers give it years, sometimes even centuries, later. She illustrates this by making paper mache pots, in which she tells new stories through historical images. In the titles of the pots, Iris refers to her personal life, which the combination of images on the pots represent. The new meanings she assigns to the vessels are anecdotal and have titles such as 'The Battle for Maarten', 'Try to catch up with your friends in your 30s' and 'PMS diaries'. This project illustrates how history is a continuous cycle of coding and decoding, of interpreting and reinterpreting events. While Iris has so far reflected on historical pottery in paper mache, she has delved into the medium of ceramics during a four-week residency in the See Lab project space. Here she practiced making hand-shaped ceramic pots and experimented with stencil techniques. From Thursday, May 30 to Saturday, June 1, Iris will hold an Open Studio, where she will show a combination of new paper mache works from the Vessels of Histories series in addition to the studies and experiments created during her residency.

Artist bio:
Iris van der Zee (1993) is a visual artist who lives and works in The Hague. Her practice consists of an interaction between sculpture and photography. As an artist, Iris is concerned with the way in which cultural objects are part of the human experience in the past, present and future - and how these change over time. She is fascinated by how interpretations of historical images change with the times in which the viewer lives. From statues to prints and other cultural objects: all were created at some point with a certain function or idea, but the meaning that people attribute to them today often differs greatly from the original intention of the maker or client. Iris has exhibited her work at Unseen, Unfair and This Art Fair, among others. In 2016 she self-published her artist book 'Statue'. In 2016 Iris graduated from the photography department of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and she completed a master's degree in Cultural Studies at the Art, Culture and Politics course at the University of Amsterdam in 2022.

Nestled in the heart of the See Lab Garden in Scheveningen, this hidden gem was ready to welcome plant lovers of all kinds. On June 2, 2024, from 1 PM to 4 PM, we celebrated an afternoon filled with nature, community, and sustainable gardening.

At Kwekerij de Verwondering, you found a curated selection of untreated plants, lovingly grown to bring a touch of green wonder to your home or garden. Our commitment to natural and sustainable practices meant you could trust that our plants were free from harmful chemicals and nurtured with care.

Jan Koos Feijlbrief looked the archetypical civil servant he was, his inner life and writings were those of a free thinker and sensitive soul. Under the name J van Oudshoorn he wrote some of the finest lines written in Dutch literature, about shame, guilt, alienation, inferiority, isolation and youthful infatuation. Over 70 years after he died, Jan Koos Feijlbrief alias J. van Oudshoorn, inspired 12 artists and a publisher to make work that will be on view from June 15 - July 7 at See Lab. Vernissage event June 15 at 17:00 hrs.

‘SOLO - AN EARTHLY MEMORY’

‘She descended onto this silent Earth from the endless cosmos above. Although abandoned, this place still holds the stories of the past through the time capsules that are spread over the land. Dreams and memories are glued to the objects that these capsules contain – they speak of fragmented parts of the past and are able to initiate intrinsic, human processes. Thus, the traveller is submerged into stimulating, sensory experiences and the endlessness of her imagination. She experiences for the first time sensations such as taste, sleep and a feeling of longing for a return to the stars.’

Sjuul Joosen is intrigued in his artistry by a constant interaction between his own fantasy and the rules to which reality is subjected. A fascination for the laws of physics and maths grows in his artistic process into surrealistic stories, where the guidelines of reality are questioned and receive a new meaning in their own, transformative world. The installation of Sjuul titled SOLO – An Earthly Memory is an all-encompassing example of this; as flown from another dimension, a woman crashes into a future world in her pointy spaceship, which seems to be an alternative version of Earth itself. The installation creates a surrealistic connection between different places, timelines and sensory experiences, where objects are able to pave a way for an intrinsic and personal journey. Visitors are warmly invited to experience this installation which Sjuul has worked meticulously on for the past six years on Scheveningen beach. 

The film will loop every hour. During weekdays the exhibition can also be visited by appointment.

‘SOLO - EEN AARDSE HERINNERING’

‘Vanuit de dansende sterrenhemel daalde zij neer op een stille Aarde. Hoewel verlaten, draagt deze plek nog de verhalen van het verleden dankzij de tijdcapsules die verspreid zijn over het land. De objecten in deze capsules tonen gefragmenteerde delen van het verleden en zijn tevens in staat om intrinsieke processen in werking te stellen. De reiziger wordt zodoende ondergedompeld in prikkelende, zintuiglijke ervaringen en de eindeloosheid van haar verbeeldingskracht. Zij ervaart voor de eerste keer sensaties zoals smaak, slaap en een gevoel van verlangen voor een terugkeer naar de sterren.’

De installatie van Sjuul Joosen, getiteld SOLO – Een Aardse herinnering, stelt een surrealistische wereld voor waar verscheidene plekken, tijdlijnen en zintuiglijke sensaties samensmelten tot een alternatieve realiteit. 

De film zal elk heel uur opnieuw afspelen. Doordeweeks is de tentoonstelling tevens op afspraak te bezoeken.
